Fellowships

The NYOA Fellowship Program gives selected students practical skills in their specific area of focus that can be called upon in future collegiate and professional settings.

Conducting

The Conducting Fellowship is an intensive apprenticeship for aspiring conductors. The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in technique with practical conducting opportunities with both singers and instrumentalists—an experience often reserved for graduate-level coursework. The fellowship includes:

  • Conducting a live chamber orchestra and vocal soloist
  • Video footage for your portfolio
  • Working closely with experienced conducting faculty throughout the academy in group and private lessons
  • Receiving instruction in score study, rehearsal planning, and conducting technique

Collaborative Piano

The Collaborative Piano Fellowship offers experienced pianists an immersive opportunity to develop the skills essential to opera and vocal collaboration. Designed for advanced high school and early college pianists, the program provides practical, hands-on experience in rehearsal, communication, and ensemble leadership. The fellowship includes:

  • Working directly with the conductor, playing select rehearsals, and gaining firsthand experience in how to follow, anticipate, and respond to musical direction
  • Participating in group classes alongside the Conducting Fellows, deepening collaboration within the music team, and learning how conductors and pianists work together to shape a performance
  • Playing for select masterclasses with guest artists, developing awareness and adaptability in a performance setting
  • Receiving mentorship from NYOA’s coaching staff, learning how to communicate effectively with singers, strengthen ensemble awareness and rehearsal technique, and lead from the keyboard

This fellowship is ideal for pianists eager to refine their collaborative artistry and expand their understanding of opera from the rehearsal room to the stage.

Directing & Stage Management

The Directing & Stage Management Fellowship gives high school students the unique opportunity to work side by side with our directing team during the academy, as well as to participate virtually in the production process during the weeks leading up to the program. The fellowship includes:

  • Assisting with production needs and getting firsthand experience with bringing an opera to the stage
  • Learning how to take staging notes
  • Gaining experience in calling a show
  • Receiving instruction on the technical aspects of how to manage a production
  • Assisting with the building of sets and props
